Permitted development limits to check against the design

Planning Portal guidance for England, updated for rules that took effect on 27 August 2026 with a transition period, sets limits for panels on a house: on a pitched roof they should project no more than 200mm from the slope and not sit above the highest part of the roof (excluding the chimney); on a flat roof equipment may not exceed 600mm above the highest part of the roof; equipment should be sited to minimise the effect on appearance and be removed when no longer needed. Panels are not permitted development on a building in the grounds of a listed building or on a scheduled monument, and in a conservation area they may not be fitted to a wall or roof slope fronting a highway.

What the handover should include

Installation certificate and any scheme certification the installer holds.
Electrical certification for the work carried out.
Network operator notification or approval reference.
Equipment warranties, workmanship warranty and who to contact for faults.
Monitoring set-up and an explanation of what normal generation looks like.
